Whidbey Island Washington Beekeeping & Honeybees - Lavender Honey - Green Road Farm - Tim Walsh

2014 – Year Seven ~~~* Top Bar Beekeeping

Top Bar Beekeeping – 2014

I have been meaning to get into top bar beekeeping and as luck would have it, I was given a top bar beehive.

Watching the bees do when there are no frames will be interesting. I don’t think I will have to worry about bar and brace comb and trying to train the bees to lay the comb out a particular way.

Harvesting will also be interesting and I am already thinking of ways to extract the honey using what in essence would be a camping toaster idea….sort of a cage that I can put the comb in and then put it in the extractor. …and/or a cage suspended over a bowl that you can cut open the comb as you want it.

SO I installed the queen and within three days they had released her. Right off the bat I notice that they are attaching the comb to to the walls near the entrance and not from the top bars. I don’t think this will be a problem unless they attach it to both the bars and the wall making it difficult to get to it.
