Changes I made This Year

July 12 2011

The main changes this year are feeding them both a 1to1 ratio of sugar water and also pollen patties. It has been a cool year and all of the plants are about 3 weeks behind their normal blooming time. Each hive goes through about a gallon a week. Although I only check the hives once a week so they may be going through it sooner. I only refill it once a week.

I have three hives and two of the hives are in direct sun (when it is sunny). One hive is in a more shaded spot. This hive in the more shaded spot definitely seems to be slower to reproduce. The bees in this hive also seem calmer. I have noticed this in past years and have thought of moving it to a more sunny spot because I am concerned that they also may produce less honey.
